Madrid South bus station from Cuenca
Since the conventional railway closed, the province depends on the AVE at Fernando Zóbel, on the outskirts of Cuenca, and on the stations in Madrid and Valencia. Catching a train from a village usually means a long road journey first.
How to get there from each area
- Cuenca y la Serranía
- From Cuenca the road to Madrid is the A-40 to Tarancón and then the A-3, which enters Madrid through Arganda and Rivas. For Barajas you leave the A-3 at the M-40 or M-50 before reaching the centre; the other option is the AVE from Fernando Zóbel.
- La Alcarria conquense
- From Huete the route heads south to the A-40 or A-3 near Tarancón, then continues to Madrid on the A-3. Until the motorway, the journey is on local roads.
- Tarancón y la Mancha Alta
- Tarancón sits on the A-3: the road to Madrid goes through Fuentidueña de Tajo and Arganda, and traffic builds from Arganda onwards at rush hour. Horcajo de Santiago joins the A-3 or the A-40 on local roads.
- La Mancha conquense
- From Mota del Cuervo, Las Pedroñeras and San Clemente the way to Madrid is the N-301 or AP-36 to Ocaña and then the A-4, or north to the A-3 around Tarancón. The best route depends on the starting town and on which part of Madrid you are heading for.
- La Manchuela conquense
- From Motilla del Palancar the way to Madrid is the A-3, through Tarancón and Arganda; Quintanar del Rey and Villanueva de la Jara first join the motorway at Motilla. For Valencia, the same A-3 runs the other way.
