See San Clemente →Cuenca province is large and thinly populated, with its people split between the capital, in the Serranía, and a string of towns in La Mancha and La Manchuela along the A-3 and N-301. It lies between Madrid and Valencia, so residents look both ways: to Barajas and Madrid through Tarancón, and to Valencia and its airport through Motilla del Palancar. The conventional railway closed in 2022 and the AVE stops outside the city, which makes the car the link in almost every journey.
Cuenca city, above the gorges of the Júcar and Huécar rivers, is the gateway to the Serranía, a mountain area of pine forests and small villages stretching towards Teruel and Guadalajara. The city holds the hospital, the high-speed station and public offices, and gets tourists all year round.
The Cuenca part of La Alcarria covers the north-west of the province, between the capital and Guadalajara, with Huete, rich in convents and churches, as its main town. It is an area of small, ageing villages whose residents travel to Cuenca or Tarancón for the doctor and paperwork.
Tarancón is the hub of the west of the province, where the A-40 from Cuenca meets the A-3, and the Cuenca town closest to Madrid. With Horcajo de Santiago and the villages around it, it forms a farming and service area that looks more to Madrid than to its own capital.
The south-west of the province is already the flat La Mancha of vineyards and windmills: Mota del Cuervo with its ridge of windmills, Las Pedroñeras, known for purple garlic, and San Clemente, a town with a Renaissance centre. They are far from the capital and for many things also look to Albacete or Madrid.
La Manchuela in Cuenca, in the south-east of the province, has Motilla del Palancar where the A-3 crosses the N-320, and Quintanar del Rey, with its furniture industry, and Villanueva de la Jara as farming towns. It sits halfway between Madrid and Valencia, and many of its trips head for the coast.

Fernando Zóbel sits several kilometres from the old town: anyone leaving the high-speed train to see Cuenca or continue to Ciudad Encantada needs that leg by car. It is the province's most requested link after Barajas.

Cuenca is the only Castilla-La Mancha province to have lost its conventional railway: the line via Aranjuez and Utiel closed in 2022 with the stations of the city and the villages. One remains, Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel, on the Madrid–Valencia high-speed line, on the outskirts of the capital and far from the old town: Madrid is under an hour away and Valencia just over fifty minutes. No public way of reaching it in time from the province remains: from Tarancón it is {{ruta:tarancon-a-estacion-ave-cuenca:km}}, from Motilla del Palancar {{ruta:motilla-del-palancar-a-estacion-ave-cuenca:km}}, from San Clemente {{ruta:san-clemente-a-estacion-ave-cuenca:km}} and from Mota del Cuervo {{ruta:mota-del-cuervo-a-estacion-ave-cuenca:km}}, and the bus does not leave in time for the first AVE. Cuenca lies between Madrid and Valencia, for flying too: Barajas is along the A-3 westwards, {{ruta:cuenca-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:km}} from the capital and {{ruta:tarancon-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:km}} from Tarancón, and Valencia airport, at Manises, along the same A-3 eastwards, {{ruta:cuenca-a-aeropuerto-valencia:km}} from the capital and much less from La Manchuela. Neither is reached by train from a village in the province: the AVE from Fernando Zóbel drops you at Atocha or Joaquín Sorolla, and there you change to Cercanías or metro. For a pre-dawn flight, the car is the only option that avoids sleeping away from home. Cuenca's old town, a World Heritage Site, has narrow, steep streets where you cannot always stop at the door; at Easter, with the processions of international tourist interest and the Religious Music Week, and at the San Mateo fiestas around 21 September, with young bulls in the Plaza Mayor, the upper town closes to traffic and the pickup has to be set outside the routes. Cuenca is the only Castilla-La Mancha province with a single public hospital: Cuenca University Hospital, in the capital, successor to Virgen de la Luz, is the reference for one of Spain's largest and emptiest provinces. A Spanish private hire vehicle may only carry out pre-booked services: it cannot pick up passengers in the street or wait at ranks. That is why everything goes through advance booking, with the price fixed before the trip and the service paperwork issued beforehand.
The big apps do not cover Castilla-La Mancha the way they cover Madrid or Barcelona. In most towns in Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Toledo there is no Uber, Cabify or Bolt with the same coverage.
