Cuenca University Hospital: getting to your appointment from Tarancón, Motilla, San Clemente or Mota del Cuervo, and what happens when you are referred to Madrid, Valencia or Albacete

Cuenca is the only Castilla-La Mancha province with a single public hospital: Cuenca University Hospital, in the capital, successor to Virgen de la Luz, is the reference for one of Spain's largest and emptiest provinces. For many patients from La Mancha or La Manchuela an appointment means a long return trip — 82 km from Tarancón, 72 km from Motilla del Palancar, 110 km from San Clemente, 119 km from Mota del Cuervo — by road, because the morning bus arrives after the nine o'clock appointment. For some specialities patients are referred to Madrid, Albacete or Valencia. The transfer to the appointment is a car with a driver there and back, not medical transport: you book with the appointment time and the return with a margin; from Tarancón, from 111,76 €.

What does Cuenca University Hospital cover and what does it not?

Cuenca University Hospital is the hub of the Cuenca Integrated Care Management area, which covers the whole province: from the Serranía to the Cuenca part of La Mancha and from the Alcarria to La Manchuela. It began as Hospital Virgen de la Luz and changed its name on becoming a university hospital; over recent years the new hospital has been built in the Terminillo area, with services moving in stages. It has emergencies, inpatient care and most medical and surgical specialities, and it is the province's only public hospital: Tarancón, Motilla del Palancar and San Clemente have specialist or health centres with consultations, but no hospital.

What it does not have, it refers: the province page says so, for some specialities patients are referred to hospitals in Madrid, Albacete or Valencia. Radiation oncology, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, major burns, transplants and the regional or national reference units are elsewhere, and the Cuenca patient adds to their illness a trip of one to two hours each way. The hospital sets the appointment; the patient organises the trip, and that is what this guide is about.

How do you reach the hospital from the villages and why is the bus no use?

Since the conventional railway closed in 2022, trips within the province are by road: the intercity buses connect few places with few departures, designed for the working day, and reach Cuenca bus station mid-morning; then you still cross the city to the hospital. For a nine o'clock specialist appointment, the bus means sleeping in the capital. The province page sums up what is most requested: trips from La Mancha and La Manchuela to the capital for the hospital, the AVE station and paperwork.

The engine's figures: Tarancón 82 km and about 58 min on the A-40; Motilla del Palancar 72 km and 70 min on the N-320; San Clemente 110 km and 90 min; Mota del Cuervo 119 km and 117 min; Las Pedroñeras 112 km; Quintanar del Rey 99 km. They are long trips for a twenty-minute appointment, but a day's: there and back in the same morning is possible from any of them, and in winter it pays to leave with a margin for the early-morning frost the province page recalls.

What is a transfer to an appointment and what is it not?

It is a car with a driver that picks you up at home, drops you at the hospital entrance and comes back when the appointment ends. It is not medical transport: no stretcher, no medical staff, not prescribed by the doctor or paid by SESCAM, and no substitute for the scheduled ambulance that patients whose condition requires it are entitled to. It is the option for someone who can travel sitting in an ordinary car and does not want to, or cannot, drive, depend on a relative taking the day off, or wait for a bus that does not fit the appointment; and for companions, who do not want to leave their father alone at the door while parking.

The price is per car and trip, not per person, and is fixed on booking; each route has its page with the "from" fare and the calculator gives the exact price with the address and time. The return is booked with an approximate time and a margin, because appointments and tests run long, and adjusted by message once the real time is known: the driver collects at the hospital entrance, a fixed, easy point. For regular treatments — dialysis, chemotherapy, rehabilitation — the same trip repeats for weeks, and through the company's panel a recurring service can be agreed with a fixed price per trip for the whole cycle.

And when you are referred to Madrid?

Madrid is the destination of most of Cuenca's referrals, to the big public hospitals (La Paz, Doce de Octubre, Gregorio Marañón, Ramón y Cajal) and to the National Paraplegics Hospital in Toledo for spinal injuries. Cuenca has two routes here: the AVE from Fernando Zóbel, which reaches Atocha in under an hour and suits anyone who can take the metro to the hospital, and the direct car along the A-40 and A-3, 166 km from Cuenca and 84 km from Tarancón, which for a patient who cannot manage changes, or travels with a companion and test results, is what gets to the hospital door at appointment time.

From Tarancón and the Alcarria, Madrid is closer than Cuenca itself, and many residents have their private doctor or insurer there; from the Cuenca part of La Mancha, the route is the A-3 or the A-4 depending on the destination hospital. The page on Madrid's hospitals from the province has the "from" fares to each centre, and the usual advice: name the hospital and the entrance (outpatients, day hospital, emergencies), because in Madrid's big complexes the difference between one door and another is ten minutes on foot.

And to Albacete or Valencia?

For La Manchuela and the south of the province, Albacete is the nearest big city, as the province page says, and Albacete General University Hospital receives referrals from Cuenca in some specialities under SESCAM arrangements: from Cuenca it is 163 km on the N-320 and from Motilla del Palancar much less. Valencia, 200 km from Cuenca along the A-3, is the destination of other referrals, above all from La Manchuela, which has the motorway a step away, and of many Cuenca people with family or an insurer on the coast.

The AVE serves Valencia as it does Madrid, in just over fifty minutes to Joaquín Sorolla and with the metro to the city's hospitals, for anyone living near Fernando Zóbel who can manage the changes; for Albacete, the Avant takes half an hour. In every other case, the direct car from home to the hospital door is what avoids changes, and the trip there and back is booked as described: appointment time, approximate return with a margin, adjustment by message. Cuenca hospital and those of Madrid, Albacete and Valencia are in the route engine from every town in the province.

Frequently asked questions

Is the transfer to the hospital medical transport?

No. It is a car with a driver to and from the appointment, with no stretcher or medical staff; it is not prescribed by the doctor or paid by SESCAM. Scheduled ambulances are requested at the health centre.

How much is Tarancón to Cuenca University Hospital?

The published "from" fare is 111,76 € for 82 km and about 58 min on the A-40. The calculator gives the exact price with the address, date and time.

Are there other public hospitals in Cuenca province?

No. Cuenca University Hospital is the only one; Tarancón, Motilla del Palancar and San Clemente have specialist or health centres with consultations, and what is not treated in Cuenca is referred to Madrid, Albacete or Valencia.

Can the driver wait while the appointment lasts?

The usual thing is to book there and back as two services, with the return at an approximate time adjusted once the real one is known. The calculator gives the price of each leg; the return is collected at the hospital entrance.

Do you do transfers to Madrid's hospitals from Cuenca province?

Yes, from any town in the province, with the hospital and entrance named on booking: 166 km from Cuenca and 84 km from Tarancón. The "from" fares to each centre are on the Madrid hospitals page.
