Studying at UCLM in Cuenca: from Barajas to the city without getting stuck at the station

You get to Cuenca from Barajas with the C1 commuter train to Chamartín and the high-speed train to Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel, which takes about an hour; the station is on the outskirts, some five kilometres from the centre, and the last stretch is by city bus or taxi. With suitcases or a late flight, a pre-booked transfer covers the 176 km to the door at a fixed price. UCLM's general academic year starts on 1 September 2026 and the second semester on 26 January 2027.

Which calendar does the Cuenca campus follow?

For 2026-2027 the University of Castilla-La Mancha publishes a general undergraduate calendar with the first semester from 1 September to 22 January and the second from 26 January to 4 June 2027, with Easter from 22 to 28 March. The Cuenca faculties organise their classes within that frame and some start a few days later, so the date that matters when booking your flight is the one your faculty publishes on its website.

If you are arriving on exchange in January, it helps to know that Cuenca sits at mid-mountain altitude: in winter it often freezes and mornings are cold. That does not change the journey from the airport, but it does change what to keep to hand when you get off the train on the outskirts, where you wait for the bus outdoors.

How do you combine the flight with the high-speed train to Cuenca?

The airport's commuter train leaves from Terminal 4, which you reach from the others on the free inter-terminal bus; line C1 gets to Chamartín in a quarter of an hour. The high-speed trains between Madrid and Valencia that stop at Cuenca leave from Chamartín and Atocha: from the airport, Chamartín is the easiest, because you change without leaving the station.

According to the timetables Renfe published on 2 November 2026, the train takes between fifty-seven minutes and a little over an hour to Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel. The last evening train varies by day and season; check it on renfe.com for your date and allow for the flight, baggage reclaim and the commuter train before counting on catching it.

How do you get from Cuenca station into town?

Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel high-speed station is not in town: it sits on the outskirts, some five kilometres from the centre. A city bus links it with the town and there is a taxi rank outside; the bus timetable is on the municipal service's website and is worth checking before you travel. With two suitcases the bus is doable but awkward; if your residence or flat is far from its route, a taxi or a car booked for that stretch saves you walking laden.

That final stretch is what surprises first-time arrivals most: you get off the train at a modern station out in the countryside, at night there is not much around and, if the train is late, the last bus may already have gone. It is also why many people prefer to arrive in a single car from the airport on moving day.

When is a transfer from Barajas worth it?

Barajas to Cuenca is about 121 min on the A-3 and A-40, and the car from the city of Cuenca starts at 221,32 €, with the price fixed before departure. It drops you straight at your residence or flat, with no commuter train, no change at Chamartín and no stretch from the station, and it waits if the flight is late because it tracks the arrival by flight number.

The more it is shared, the more it pays off: several students on the same flight, a family with a year's luggage, or a night arrival that would otherwise mean sleeping in Madrid. The price is per car, not per person, and it can be booked in the traveller's name even if someone else pays from another country.

And going home for Christmas or the summer?

UCLM's general calendar closes marks for the first-semester ordinary sitting on 5 February 2027 and for the second on 10 June, with Christmas falling between the two teaching periods. Those are the days when half the residence heads for Barajas at once: the morning trains from Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel fill up, and you have to add the bus or taxi from town out to the station, which is on the outskirts.

For an early flight, a pre-booked transfer from your door to the terminal saves all three legs —town to station, train and commuter train— and the night in Madrid. If several of you have similar flights, one car is booked with several pickups in town and the price is fixed before departure.
