Tarancón and the Mancha Alta to Madrid without a train: Atocha, Chamartín and IFEMA along the A-3, the Conde de Casal bus and the transfer with a driver for commuters, appointments and trade fairs
Tarancón is the Cuenca town closest to Madrid and, since the conventional railway stopped carrying passengers in 2022, its station is no use for reaching the capital: the trip is along the A-3, by scheduled bus to the Conde de Casal interchange or by car. The transfer with a driver drops you at the door of Atocha, 81 km and about 58 min from Tarancón, from 110,93 € for the whole car; Chamartín is 88 km and IFEMA 87 km. For anyone going to work, to an appointment or to a trade fair and coming back the same day, the price is per car and per trip, it is fixed before booking and the return is set in the same booking.

Why do Tarancón and Horcajo de Santiago have no train to Madrid?
Tarancón had a station for over a century on the Aranjuez–Cuenca–Utiel line, the one that linked Madrid and Valencia through the interior, and the Media Distancia trains that ran along it also stopped at Huete. In 2022 the Ministry of Transport and the regional government agreed to close that line to passengers and replace it with buses, so today no passenger train leaves the station building. The Madrid–Valencia high-speed line crosses the province, but its only stop in Cuenca is Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel, 86 km from Tarancón in the opposite direction to Madrid. Horcajo de Santiago and the villages of the Mancha Alta join the A-3 or the A-40 on local roads and depend on Tarancón for any bus.
That geography has a practical consequence: for the Mancha Alta the AVE is not an alternative. Going up to Fernando Zóbel means about 62 min by car eastwards and then a train back westwards, and the sum always loses against the direct A-3, which takes Tarancón to Atocha in about 58 min. The area has known this for decades, which is why, as the province page says, it looks more to Madrid than to its own capital: people work, study and see the doctor in Madrid, and the train some residents take is the one leaving Atocha or Chamartín for other cities, not the one arriving in Cuenca.
What bus is there from Tarancón and how far does it go?
Tarancón is served by the scheduled buses of the Madrid–Cuenca and Madrid–Valencia corridor, which enter Madrid along the A-3 and end at the Conde de Casal interchange, at the end of Avenida del Mediterráneo. There is metro line 6 there, and from that station you connect with Atocha in a few metro stops or on foot down Cuesta de Moyano, and with Chamartín after one change. For one person with little luggage and a timetable that fits the published departures, it is the cheapest way to reach Madrid from the Mancha Alta, and the one many students use on Sunday evenings and on the Friday trip back.
Its limits lie at both ends of the day and in the villages. The timetables are fixed and designed for the corridor, not for someone starting work first thing in Alcobendas or with a mid-morning appointment at a hospital in the north of Madrid: the sum of bus, metro and the last stretch on foot becomes long and hard to predict. From Horcajo de Santiago or Huete you first have to reach the stop in Tarancón, which adds another trip along local roads in your own car or with someone to drop you off. And for a student's move, a wheelchair or a pushchair, the change at Conde de Casal is what weighs most. Frequencies and timetables belong to the operator and are on the Transport Consortium's website.
How long and how much to Atocha, Chamartín and IFEMA with a driver?
The transfer with a driver picks up at the address you give, in Tarancón or any village in the area, and follows the A-3 through Fuentidueña de Tajo, Villarejo de Salvanés and Arganda to the M-30, which leads to Atocha along Avenida del Mediterráneo: it is 81 km and about 58 min, with a "from" fare of 110,93 € for the whole car. Chamartín is in the north of the city, for trains to Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country and much of the high-speed network: you skirt Madrid on the M-40 or cross it on Calle 30, and it is 88 km, from 118,22 €. To the centre, for an errand or a visit, the "from" fare is 114,45 €.
IFEMA is in Campo de las Naciones, north-east of Madrid, between the M-40, the M-11 and the airport, and from the A-3 it is reached without touching the centre: the M-40 northwards to the exhibition centre exit. It is 87 km and about 62 min from Tarancón, and the driver drops you at the door of the hall named on your pass, which at a big fair saves the walk from the car park and the metro. Barajas is a step from the exhibition centre; from Horcajo de Santiago to the airport it is 113 km. The stretch that varies most is the A-3 between Arganda and the M-40, busy towards Madrid first thing in the morning and outbound at the end of the afternoon; at midday and at weekends the engine's time is met with room to spare.
How is the round trip for an appointment, a working day or a trade fair organised?
The outward and return legs are booked together, each with its time and address: the driver drops you at the door of the clinic, the office or the hall, and picks you up at the same point at the agreed time. For a medical appointment in Madrid, which almost never ends when planned, the return is set with a margin or confirmed by message as you leave, and the price of each leg is fixed before booking, with no meter running in the waiting room. It is worth being clear about what this service is: a car with a driver to the address of the centre, not medical transport or an ambulance; anyone who needs a wheelchair or help getting in says so when booking and a suitable vehicle is assigned if one is available.
Commuters from the Mancha Alta who work in Madrid every day usually drive their own or a shared car, and the transfer with a driver comes in on the days when that scheme fails: the car in the workshop, a shift that starts before the first bus, a trip with the whole family from Horcajo or a meeting you do not want to arrive at after driving. For a group of colleagues going to a fair at IFEMA, a single car from Tarancón costs the price of the vehicle, split between those travelling, and avoids the exhibition centre car park. Companies in the area that repeat these trips can open a business account, with an invoice per service or a monthly one, as explained on the business page and in the help section.
And from Horcajo de Santiago, Huete and the surrounding villages?
The advantage of the car with a driver in the villages is that it starts at home. From Horcajo de Santiago there is no need to get to the stop in Tarancón: the driver picks up in the village, reaches the A-3 on the local roads and continues to Madrid, with 101 km to Atocha and a "from" fare of 134,66 €. From Huete, in the Alcarria, you head south to the A-40 or the A-3 around Tarancón and from there to the capital, 121 km to Atocha. Every municipality in the province has its route page with the "from" fare to Atocha, Chamartín, IFEMA, Barajas and the centre, and the calculator gives the exact price with the address, date and time.
The calendar matters too. At the start and end of the holidays, at Easter, in summer and at Christmas, transfers from Tarancón to Barajas and to Madrid's stations increase, and the first trains and flights of the day are the first to be booked, so it pays to ask for the car as soon as you have the ticket. In winter, early-morning frost is common on the province's roads, and a small-hours departure from Huete or from the Mancha Alta calls for some margin before reaching the motorway. With the train number, the driver works out the pickup time to reach Atocha or Chamartín with time for the access control, and on the way back waits at the station even if the train is late.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a train from Tarancón to Madrid?
No. The conventional Aranjuez–Cuenca–Utiel line, which gave Tarancón and Huete a station, closed to passengers in 2022 and buses replaced it. The nearest AVE is at Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel, 86 km in the opposite direction, so Madrid is reached along the A-3 by bus or by car.
How much is Tarancón to Atocha with a driver?
The published "from" fare is 110,93 € for the whole car, for 81 km and about 58 min along the A-3; the calculator gives the exact price with the address, date and time, and it is fixed before booking.
How long is Tarancón to IFEMA?
About 62 min for 87 km, along the A-3 and the M-40 without entering central Madrid. At morning rush hour the A-3 from Arganda adds time; for a fair that opens first thing it is worth leaving earlier than the engine says.
Can you take me to an appointment in Madrid and bring me back to Tarancón?
Yes. The outward and return legs are booked together, with the centre's address and the appointment time; the return is set with a margin or confirmed as you leave. It is a car with a driver to the door, not medical transport, and the price of each leg is fixed before booking.
Do you pick up in Horcajo de Santiago or Huete for Madrid?
Yes, in any municipality in the province and at the time requested, including the small hours. From Horcajo de Santiago to Atocha the "from" fare is 134,66 €; each town has its route page with the figures to Atocha, Chamartín, IFEMA and Barajas.
