AVE train or car with driver to get to Madrid?
Travelling alone, with little luggage and heading near Atocha, the train usually wins. The car wins in four specific cases: three or four of you, large suitcases, an origin or destination not next to a station, or travelling at an hour with no train — which in Castilla-La Mancha means most of the small hours.

Why is the train's travel time not the journey time?
Toledo is half an hour from Atocha by train, and that is true. What that figure leaves out is getting to the station, being there with margin, and the metro or taxi leg from Atocha to where you are actually going. Door to door, half an hour often becomes an hour and a quarter.
In Cuenca the gap is bigger: the high-speed station sits about five kilometres from the old town, so the journey starts with a transfer before you even board.
When is the car actually cheaper?
When several of you travel. The train charges per person and the car per vehicle: with three or four passengers, a fixed-price transfer usually comes in below three or four one-way tickets, especially if they are not bought weeks ahead.
And when the cheap ticket is gone. High-speed fares are dearer on the day than a fortnight ahead; a transfer's price does not change because you booked it in a hurry.
And at five in the morning?
At that hour there is no train, and that is where no comparison applies. For an early flight at Barajas, a car with driver is the only option that leaves when it needs to and goes straight to the terminal, with no station changes in Madrid dragging suitcases.
Can you combine the two?
Plenty of people do exactly that, and it is often the sensible answer: car to the station — or from it — and train for the long leg. We plan that part around the train's actual time, not an approximate one, and wait at no charge if the train is late.

Complimentary waiting at a station is thirty minutes from the scheduled time. If the delay is longer, tell us on WhatsApp and we adjust: what we do not do is leave on the dot and charge a no-show.
