What time should you leave Castilla-La Mancha for a Madrid-Barajas flight?

Add three things to the driving time: the check-in margin your airline asks for at the airport (two hours for flights within Europe, three for long haul is the usual reference), twenty minutes for M-50 traffic and ten for the pickup. From the Sagra area that means leaving about four hours before departure for a European flight.

Why is the sat-nav time not enough?

The sat-nav gives the time between two points with current traffic, not with the traffic of six in the morning on a Monday. And the stretch that varies most is not the motorway: it is the M-50 and the terminal access roads, where a fifteen-minute jam eats the whole margin you had calculated.

Then there is the time inside the airport. Barajas has four terminals and T4S is a shuttle train away from T4: if you check in at T4 and board at T4S, there are a good twenty minutes of internal transfer that appear on no road map.

How long does it really take from each area?

As a daytime reference with no incidents: from the Henares corridor (Guadalajara, Azuqueca, Alovera) the airport is half an hour away on the A-2; from the Sagra area (Illescas, Seseña, Yuncos) about forty-five minutes on the A-42 or A-4 plus the M-50; from Toledo city just under an hour; from Cuenca and Ciudad Real around two hours; from Albacete, two and a half.

At peak times — between seven and half past nine, and between five and eight in the evening — add twenty to forty minutes to any of those journeys. Each route page shows the estimated time and the reference price for that specific trip.

What if the flight leaves before dawn?

For a seven o'clock flight, pickup is usually between half past three and half past four depending on the area. At that hour there is no traffic and the journey is faster and more predictable than mid-morning, so less margin is needed: what you cannot recover is a closed check-in desk.

Pre-dawn pickups are booked the day before. That is not a commercial preference: a Spanish private hire vehicle may only carry out pre-booked services, and at four in the morning there is nobody to call to improvise.

Frequently asked questions

Do you wait if the return flight is delayed?

Yes. With the flight number we check the actual arrival and adjust the pickup time at no cost. Complimentary waiting at the airport is 60 minutes from landing, which is how long it takes to collect luggage and get out on a normal day.

Which terminal do you meet me at?

The one your flight arrives at. For departures we drop you at your terminal door; for arrivals we meet you in the hall with a name sign, or at the pickup area if you prefer to walk straight out.
